Background

Dunkin Donuts corporation initiated a company wide upgrade of its WiFi network. This project was designed as a WiFi access device replacement. This project was geographically rolled out in NJ, PA,DE,and MD. NDT in coordination with Comcast Business provided technician support, equipment preconfiguration and NDT provided implementation to upgrade the remote network at 656 locations. Installation focused on improving the WiFi  in walk-in refrigeration units and for hand-held inventory control signals WiFi scanners, for instant inventory control. Project deployment was scheduled by locations in the same counties in multiple states. 

40% of serviced locations required NDT to locate and remove all existing Dunkin Donuts communications equipment. We would replace equipment with new equipment provided by Comcast Business. NDT maintained a strict inventory of all retired equipment, boxed, and returned to Comcast. All installations are to be completed within a 6 hour period during normal business hours.

Locations Completed: 656 locations

Time period: 26 Weeks

Time limit at each site: Max allowed – 6 hours

Project operational hours: 24 hours

Operations staff: (2) project managers, (1) Quality Control manager

Field teams’ staff: (2) low voltage field technicians

Improved Coverage - The indoor coverage will be all relevant indoor occupied areas, lobbies, retail space, offices, and common space where a minimum of 95% of the indoor space provides reception at the specified level.

Excellent Reception – Signal strength will be considered for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies

Primary Signal Strength measured for a minimum of -65dBm

Secondary Signal Strength measured for a minimum of -75dBm

 

Additional Capacity – The capacity will be considered by the number of expected devices and their use. It is considered that the end-users will use laptops for business tasks such as file sharing, video conferencing and email collaboration.  Additional capacity considerations were for smartphones and tablet use

Case Study 1

Project:  Dunkin Donuts Equipment Upgrade

Background

This project was designed as a WiFi access device replacement, installing additional new devices where needed and localized by floor network upgrade to support the new WiFi network.  

Multiple city of Philadelphia agencies were experiencing  poor WiFi performance when hosting. Over 80 % of these work floors are heavily populated office spaces that average over 100 employees. The city requested the deployment of WiFi access point devices in 5 metropolitan office buildings that are managed by the City of Philadelphia. It was determined that there were multiple dead-zones where no WiFi signal could be detected, this also directly impacted bluetooth use and many audio visual applications that were not usable. This project was to address departmental WiFi service complaints focusing on a large network functioning at 40% of its capacity.

Case Study 3

The Philadelphia Enterprise Center

 Installation of WiFi, Access Control System, Security Cameras.

Background

To design and implement a WIFI 6 (AX) Network to extend robust data coverage throughout The Enterprise Center facility at 4548 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19139. This facility utilizes older construction materials as it was built in 1952. It is the original location of the TV show American Bandstand and was one of the first designed specifically for television broadcasting in America. It was updated in 1989 and is a historic landmark. The coverage area is approximately 30,000 square feet:

  • Upper Floor; coverage for approximately 8000 square feet and capacity for up to 30 end-users 

  • Street Level Floor; coverage for approximately 15,000 square feet and capacity for up to 300 users during events

  • Basement Floor; coverage for approximately 7500 square feet and initial capacity for up to 3 end-users

The largest room which is used to host corporate sponsors and government officials is 3,100 sq ft with a maximum capacity of 280. The second largest room is 660 sq ft with a maximum capacity of 50 people. Using professional Ekahau software and RF signal analysis tools, we worked with the client to develop a pre-construction, predictive design. This allowed us to recommend both the right hardware and mounting locations for the client’s desired capacity goals before any structured cabling began. Additional services were provided to coordinate an upgrade of the carrier ISP for higher bandwidth service.
